Schwa Day fun! Columbia Elementary celebrated National Schwa Day with a pajama day and schwa activities!
What is the schwa sound? Itβs a day to recognize and appreciate that schwa is a unique aspect of the pronunciation of some vowels in English. The schwa sound βuhβ is found in an unstressed syllable. For example, the word "lemon" has a schwa sound ("uh") for the letter "o," so it is pronounced "lem-uhn." In the word April, the βiβ says βuh,β and in the word eleven, the 2nd βeβ says βuh.
Since the schwa sound is always found in an unstressed syllable, we wore pajamas and were "unstressed" for the day, too!
The teachers enjoyed some "lemon" snacks, and the students learned about schwa with some activities, including this YouTube video of a read-aloud of the book "The Not-So-Lazy Schwa" by the author, Yvette Manns.
